At the beginning of 20 century some western researchers discovered different and same time related phenomenon. American microbiologist and cancer researcher, Dr. Royal Raymond Rife, Dr. Ehrenfried Pfeiffer and Dr. Otto H. Warburg was pioneering alternative approach to cancer yearly detection and discovery of the cure.

Dr. Ehrenfried Pfeiffer was pondering cancer problems in Basle, Switzerland; he noticed a cup of steaming hot coffee and one of tea resting side by side on a window sill. The steam from both cups condensed on the window pane, but the crystals of the frost patterns were very different. Dr. Pfeiffer had a hunch that the blood of cancer victims and the blood of healthy persons might perhaps form crystals as different as those of coffee and tea. After trying some 23 substances, he hit on copper chloride as blood’s best crystallizing agent. Last week Dr. Pfeiffer and his colleague, Dr. George Miley of Philadelphia’s Hahnemann Medical College, described their new test for the presence of early cancer. A drop of blood is taken from the finger tip of a cancer suspect. The blood is dissolved in a small amount of lukewarm sterile water, mixed with copper chloride and spread on a glass microscope slide to crystallize. Healthy blood forms a green crystal pattern which, under a microscope, looks like a delicate, fan-shaped palm leaf. But in cancerous blood some unknown chemical forms a pattern of scattered, double-wing bow ties. In 1,000 trials on known cancer victims, said Drs. Pfeiffer and Miley, the copper test was 80% accurate.

Greatest value of the test is that it can detect the presence of cancer cells long before any growth appears on the body.

It is known that many diseases, including cancer cells cannot live in an alkaline, oxygenated environment, as demonstrated by Dr. Otto Heinrich Warburg in 1931 who won the Nobel Prize for his work in 1924. In his previous work he hypothesized that cancer, malignant growth, and tumor growth are caused by the fact that tumor cells mainly generate energy (as e.g. adenosine triphosphate/ ATP) by non-oxidative breakdown of glucose (a process called glycolysis). This is in contrast to “healthy” cells which mainly generate energy from oxidative breakdown of pyruvate. Warburg reported a fundamental difference between normal and cancerous cells to be the ratio of glycolysis to respiration; this observation is also known as the Warburg effect.

In recent years, Warburg’s hypothesis has re-gained attention due to several discoveries linking impaired mitochondrial function as well as impaired respiration to the growth, division and expansion of tumor cells. In a study by Michael Ristow and co-workers,colon cancer lines were modified to overexpress frataxin. The results of their work suggest that an increase in oxidative metabolism induced by mitochondrial frataxin may inhibit cancer growth in mammals.

In 1999 a group of scientists from University of Salzburg and Kosice finally could confirm the cancer-hypothesis of O. Warburg in an experiment on VA13 cells with medical oxygen enriched by pico dosis of positively ionized oxygen (O2+●) .

Subsequent work has shown that the Warburg effect, indeed, might lead to a promising approach in the treatment of solid tumors. The chemical dichloroacetic acid (DCA), which promotes respiration and the activity of mitochondria, has been shown to kill cancer cells in vitro and in some animal models. The body often kills damaged cells by apoptosis, a mechanism of self-destruction that involves mitochondria, but this mechanism fails in cancer cells where the mitochondria are shut down. The reactivation of mitochondria in cancer cells restarts their apoptosis program. Besides promising human research at the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta led by Dr Evangelos Michelakis, other glycotic inhibitors besides DCA that hold promise include 3-BrOP being researched at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) at Emory University School of Medicine, and 3-bromopyruvate (3-BrPA) at Johns Hopkins University.
